MyBookPal vs ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Meta AI and NotebookLM

What a general-purpose AI cannot do with the textbook on your desk, and why that matters more than model size.

10 September 2026 · 7 minute read

If you are studying for WASSCE next year, or sitting in a lecture theatre in Legon with a handout you did not follow, you already have access to some of the best AI in the world. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Meta AI are free to start, they are extraordinary at explaining an idea, and they will answer almost anything you ask them.

And yet students keep coming back with the same complaint: it did not answer the question I actually had. The question was not "what is photosynthesis". The question was "what does this paragraph, on this page, of the book my teacher will examine me on, actually mean?"

A general assistant knows everything except the book on your desk. MyBookPal starts from that book and does not leave it.

The difference is where the answer comes from

Ask a general assistant about page 41 of your Science course book and it has never seen page 41. It will give you a good, plausible, confident answer about the topic in general. Sometimes that is exactly right. Sometimes it explains a method your syllabus does not use, defines a term differently from your textbook, or invents a detail that sounds correct. You will not know which, because you are the one who does not understand the page yet.

MyBookPal answers from the page in front of you. Circle a paragraph with the pen tool and the tutor is handed that text. Ask it something the page does not cover and it tells you so, rather than filling the gap with something that sounds right. That refusal is the feature. An answer you can check against the paragraph two centimetres above it is worth more than a better answer you cannot.

Think of it as NotebookLM for textbooks, built for Africa

NotebookLM got something important right: an assistant that answers from your documents is more useful for studying than one that answers from everything. If you have used it, you already understand the core of MyBookPal.

The difference is who it is built for. NotebookLM assumes you already have the PDF, a laptop, a Google account and the bandwidth to upload a 40 MB scan. A student in Kumasi has a printed textbook, an Android phone, a mobile-money wallet and a data bundle they are counting. So:

Free AI for university students

If you are at university, MyBookPal is effectively free. Verify a campus email address — anything on a university domain — and 10,000 AI credits land in your account. Verify your phone number too and that becomes 12,000.

Then upload what you are actually being examined on. Lecture slides, handouts, past papers, the chapter your lecturer photocopied. The same tutor reads them with you, explains them, and tests you on them. For most students this replaces a subscription they were never going to be able to pay for in the first place.

What a general assistant is still better at

Worth saying plainly, because a comparison that finds no fault with itself is an advertisement. If you want to draft an essay, write code, plan an argument, translate something, or think out loud about a topic with no particular source in front of you, use ChatGPT or Claude or Gemini. They are better at that, and MyBookPal is not trying to be.

MyBookPal is for the two hours between opening a textbook and understanding it. That is a narrower job, and doing it against the exact page you are examined on is why it works.

Questions people ask

Is MyBookPal like NotebookLM?

The idea is the same: an AI that answers from documents you give it rather than from the whole internet. MyBookPal is that idea built for a student in Africa. The documents are the textbooks your school actually uses, WAEC and BECE past papers and your own lecture handouts. It runs on the phone you already own, it reads pages aloud, it marks maths line by line, and a printed MyBookPal textbook unlocks its own digital copy with the code inside the cover.

Why not just use ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude?

They are general assistants and they are very good at being that. Ask one about page 41 of your Science course book and it has never seen page 41. MyBookPal answers from the page in front of you, and says so when your question is not on that page rather than inventing an answer that sounds right.

How much does MyBookPal cost?

You start with 40 AI credits and no account. Asking about a page costs 5 credits, being tested on it costs 2, and reading a page aloud in your phone's own voice is free and unlimited. University students who verify a campus email address receive 10,000 AI credits, and 2,000 more for verifying a phone number.

Does it work without much data or a new phone?

It runs in a browser at app.mybookpal.africa with nothing to install, and there is an Android APK you can download directly. Payments are mobile money.

Which exams and books does it cover?

WASSCE and BECE past questions, syllabus material, and textbooks from Ghanaian publishers. You can also upload your own PDF, which is what most university students do.
